There is no question why functional safety plays such an important role. Plant operators invest a lot to avoid personal risks. In the end, any preventive measure is far more cost-effective than an accident with consequences for people, processes, plants or the environment. This technical paper provides information for advanced practitioners without using the standard language too much.

Functional Safety

Investments in functional safety, and thus in measures to avoid accidental and systematic errors, are very moderate if one relies directly on instruments developed according to IEC 61508. This standard provides plant operators with more safety, reduces time to prove operational reliability and shifts a decisive part of their efforts for required measures and documentation to manufacturers.
